Tailor Sentenced to 12 Years for Sexual Assault
A young tailor named Idris Rasheed, 23, received a 12-year prison sentence from an Oyo State High Court in Ibadan for the sexual assault of a woman.
Justice Oyeyemi Ajayi, who presided over the trial, mentioned that the convict admitted his guilt and medical evidence verified the assault, confirming both penetration and the presence of semen.
The court declared that Rasheed’s sentence would be effective starting January 29, 2023, the date he was first brought to court.
The defense attorney, Mr. O. Ekundayo, argued that Rasheed had already been in Agodi prison for 19 months and nine days prior to sentencing.
Ekundayo portrayed his client as someone who has behaved well during his imprisonment and has learned valuable lessons from his experience.
He noted that Rasheed had not attempted to escape and urged the court to show leniency in light of the circumstances.
Earlier in the proceedings, Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs. K. Oloso-Olayiwola, detailed the charges against Rasheed, stating that he had assaulted a 29-year-old petty trader and divorcee while she was walking home around 10 p.m.
According to Oloso-Olayiwola, the victim had sought Rasheed’s help to find a mosque where she could stay for the night when he unexpectedly attacked her, choking her and assaulting her on the ground.
The prosecutor confirmed that Rasheed’s actions violated Sections 357 and 358 of the Criminal Code of Oyo State.
