On Tuesday, July 9, 2024, a devastating accident occurred at Eke Awgbu market in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra resulting in the death of five people and injuring six others.
The spokesperson of the Anambra State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Margret Onagbe, confirmed that the accident was caused by a brake failure of a trailer which veered off the road into the bush.
Onagbe dismissed any claims linking the accident to the Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA).
The fatal crash involved multiple vehicles including a commercial truck, a tricycle, a motorcycle, and a car with several individuals sustaining injuries and fatalities.
Excessive speed and brake failure were cited as the likely causes of the tragic accident.
Witnesses reported that the driver lost control of the speeding truck, leading to the collision with other vehicles at a checkpoint.
The injured victims were rushed to a nearby health center while the deceased were taken to a mortuary.
The FRSC rescue team managed the traffic and cleared the crash site.
The Sector Commander Anambra State Corps Commander expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured victims.
Motorists were reminded to adhere to speed limits for their safety and that of others on the road.
