Tragic Accident on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Claims Two Lives
A serious accident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway around 7:15 am near Danco Filling Station, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to five others.
The Ogun State Police confirmed the incident on Sunday.
The collision involved a Toyota Sienna space bus, registration number EPE 430 HT, operated by Adewale Yusuf, and a stationary luxury bus from Young Shall Grow Transport Company, with plate number KTU 835 XY, driven by Chukwudi Ilo from Anambra State.
Chief Superintendent of Police, Omolola Odutola, provided details in a statement to the press on Sunday.
According to Odutola, “Initial reports indicate that the luxury bus had halted in traffic due to an earlier minor accident when the Toyota Sienna, traveling at high speed, lost control and crashed into it from behind.”
“The crash resulted in five passengers from the Sienna bus sustaining serious injuries; they were rushed to Live Well Hospital in Sagamu. Unfortunately, two men, Charles Izuchukwu, a Babcock University staff member, and another unidentified occupant, did not survive their injuries at the hospital.”
“The bodies of the deceased were taken to Last Home Green Mortuary in Sagamu. Meanwhile, the Sienna bus driver and two other injured passengers are currently receiving treatment.”
The Motor Traffic Department quickly arrived at the scene to document the incident and clear the wreckage for traffic to resume smoothly.
Both vehicles have been transported to the MTD Office in Sagamu for further examination by Vehicle Inspection Officers.
The police highlighted that reckless driving, speeding, and negligence are significant contributors to road accidents.
They also identified additional risk factors, such as driving under the influence, using poor-quality tires, lack of attention, ignoring traffic laws, and prioritizing profits over passenger safety.
The police urge all motorists, especially commercial drivers, to drive carefully, respect speed limits, and avoid dangerous behaviors that could jeopardize lives.
Drivers are cautioned against substance abuse and are reminded to ensure their vehicles are safe and in good condition before commencing any journey.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing traffic laws aimed at reducing road accidents and stated that any drivers breaking these regulations will face penalties.
The public is encouraged to report reckless drivers and any hazardous road conditions to nearby police stations or road safety officials.
