The Police Command in Benue State has announced the detention of two men related to the fatal incident of an elderly woman labeled a witch in Egba village, situated in the Agatu Local Government Area.
This information was shared by SP Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer.
She confirmed the apprehension of Bako, aged 50, and 40-year-old Oyaje Clement, suspected to be involved in the brutal act, which took place on the night of December 24.
Anene criticized the troubling trend of mob justice in the region, particularly incidences targeting older individuals accused of practicing witchcraft.
“The ongoing issue in the state is alarming, with young people taking matters into their own hands and attacking the elderly based on witchcraft allegations.
“On December 24, 2024, at approximately 7:00 p.m., we were informed about the slaying of an elderly woman in Egba village due to witchcraft accusations.
“Subsequent inquiries led to the arrest of two suspects in relation to this incident.”
Anene highlighted the commitment of the police to combat such archaic practices and ensure that those responsible face legal consequences.
She called on the community to avoid taking justice into their own hands and to report such criminal behaviors to the authorities.
