Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes has faced scrutiny following an incident that occurred during a night out in Madrid.
On Sunday, September 8, Nunes was apprehended in the early hours at La Riviera nightclub, accused of taking a mobile phone from a man after a confrontation in the restroom.
While spending time with friends during the international break, the Portuguese player found himself in a legal predicament when a 58-year-old man accused him of stealing his phone.
The altercation reportedly began when the man attempted to photograph Nunes without consent while he was in a private stall, prompting a reaction from the athlete.
The Incident: What Led to Nunes’ Arrest?
Eyewitnesses indicated that the alleged victim tried to capture a picture in a compromising situation, which understandably angered Nunes. Reports suggest that the 26-year-old took the man’s phone and refused to hand it back, citing a violation of his privacy.
There’s also a claim that the man may have touched Nunes while trying to take the picture, leading to a defensive response from the footballer, who believed his privacy was invaded. Police were summoned, and Nunes was found with the phone in question.
As events unfolded, Nunes reportedly exhibited a “defiant” demeanor toward the officers. He was taken to the Arganzuela police station for questioning but was later released on bail the same day.
His attorney promptly intervened to facilitate his release, and the matter was deemed a minor theft, allowing Nunes to avoid a court appearance.
In spite of the nightclub incident, Nunes returned to play for Manchester City in their 2-1 victory against Brentford on September 14, entering as a second-half substitute. Fans hope this off-the-field occurrence won’t distract him as the season continues.
