Pep Guardiola’s Gesture: What Holding Up Six Fingers to Liverpool Fans Signifies

Why did Pep Guardiola hold up six fingers at Liverpool fans in Man City

Liverpool secured a solid 2-0 win over a struggling Manchester City on Sunday, leading to some playful chants from their supporters aimed at one of their main rivals.

Pep Guardiola has been at the helm for City during a remarkable run, clinching six out of the last seven Premier League titles, triumphing over the Reds in nail-biting season finales in both 2018/19 and 2021/22.

However, the current season seems a world away from that success, as City finds themselves 11 points adrift of the league leaders, who are being led by Arne Slot.

After Mohamed Salah scored a penalty in the 78th minute, sealing the win, Liverpool fans couldn’t help but taunt Guardiola with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning.”

City’s recent performance has been dismal, with six losses in their last seven matches across all tournaments. In response to the taunts, Guardiola maintained a light-hearted attitude, playfully signaling the number six to represent his title victories in the Premier League.

He continued this display at the end of the match when he and his players acknowledged the City supporters in the Anfield Road End.

“All the fans want to sack me, oh my God!” Guardiola laughed in his post-match interview with Sky Sports. “It all began after the Brighton game [a 2-1 Premier League loss last month]. Maybe they’re right; perhaps I should be sacked based on our results.”

“But I really didn’t expect it at Anfield. They didn’t chant at 1-0, but at 2-0, perhaps we should have sung that song before, not now. I didn’t foresee this response from Liverpool fans.”

“That’s fine; it’s part of the sport, and I get it completely. We have had significant contests over time. They’ve won; we’ve won. I have immense respect for them, and that’s all that matters.”

Guardiola’s repeated hand signals might echo tactics of his old rival, Jose Mourinho, who is known for such antics when facing challenges. Nonetheless, Guardiola’s light-hearted demeanor post-match stood out amid City’s struggles.
