Pochettino’s Urgent Call to Aspiring World Cup Stars

USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino sends long, loud message about focus to aspiring World Cup players image

In the realm of American sports, some coaches can convey powerful messages with a mere sentence or a piercing look. Mauricio Pochettino, however, takes a different approach, as if U.S. Soccer is compensating him for every word he uses.

The squad announced by the United States men’s national team on Thursday for two friendly matches in June ahead of this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup left out several players who were integral to the promising young core that shined at the 2022 World Cup but has since faltered. This decision seems questionable, especially with the 2026 World Cup looming just a year away, and the Gold Cup being the last competitive outing for the USMNT before then.

Many saw this as a crucial opportunity to unite the core group and encourage them to deliver different results compared to their disappointing showings in last summer’s Copa America or during the CONCACAF Nations League in March.

However, Pochettino had a different perspective.

“Our goal for the national team is to attract individuals who are eager to join and give their all,” Pochettino explained to Sporting News’ Kyle Bonn, in the midst of a four-minute reply regarding roster choices.

“Performing entails adhering to protocols, fostering a positive atmosphere, being part of the team, and meeting all aspects of our expectations. When I say ‘our expectations,’ I mean the federation’s, not just mine. It’s important to recognize that opportunities to join us may decrease. Given our limited time to train—perhaps one, two, or three sessions before a match—it’s vital to maximize that time efficiently.”

“If you arrive at the camp with the mindset of enjoying leisure activities—playing golf, dining out, or catching up with family and friends—then is that the culture we want to cultivate? Absolutely not. We aim to join the national team focused, dedicating all our energy to this cause. A winning mentality is essential, and we must pursue our targets. If we want to excel in a year, today must be regarded as a pivotal day. It isn’t a matter of ‘waiting’ for the World Cup. It’s a countdown—six months, then one month, and before you know it, it’s too late. This is why a different mindset is crucial.”

Did you grasp all that? It’s quite a bit. And the message continued. He underscored the necessity of incorporating emerging players who can challenge seasoned veterans. He admitted that the USMNT had many shortcomings in their recent gatherings, highlighted by consecutive defeats against Panama and Canada in the Nations League, which, perhaps, were overshadowed by the country’s March Madness excitement.

Sergino Dest

USMNT’s summer lineup missing key players

The absence of standout player Christian Pulisic was reportedly due to his own request, according to sporting director Matt Crocker. Jedi Robinson, an up-and-coming talent on the left flank, has been dealing with an ongoing injury. Midfielder Yunus Musah also sought to be excused for personal reasons.

BONN: Pochettino risks too much by omitting Pulisic from summer lineup

Several notable players missing were classified by Pochettino as “football decisions,” including striker Josh Sargent, midfielder Tanner Tessmann, and defenders Cameron Carter-Vickers and Auston Trusty. The reasons for excluding forward Alejandro Zendejas, right-back Joe Scally, and versatile Richy Ledezma were not elaborated. Key players Timothy Weah, Weston McKennie, and Gio Reyna will also be absent due to commitments in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Instead, the U.S. camp will include four players without caps: defender Alex Freeman from Orlando City, midfielder Sebastian Berhalter of the Vancouver Whitecaps, midfielder Quinn Sullivan from the Philadelphia Union, and forward Damion Downs from FC Koln in Germany. In addition, there will be several players with fewer than five international appearances.

This tournament presents an opportunity for right-back Sergino Dest to continue his recovery from a knee injury that sidelined him for nearly a year, for defensive midfielder Tyler Adams to solidify his position in what might be the team’s weakest area, and for Johnny Cardoso to showcase his abilities for Real Betis—he is expected to start in the UEFA Conference League final against Chelsea on May 28 and needs to translate that success to the USMNT.

Pochettino stressed that he didn’t aim to “punish” anyone for their lackluster performances in March, yet his emphasis on focus seemed contradictory, especially considering the acclaim he offered to veteran Brenden Aaronson, who scored nine goals for Leeds United and significantly contributed to their quest for the Championship division title.

“We recognize his talent. What matters most is that he consistently brings his dynamism, positivity, enthusiasm, and passion—these attributes are vital in inspiring the team and fostering a strong emotional connection,” Pochettino remarked. “Of course, following that, he must deliver results.”
