PSG, Premier League Clash for Portugal’s All-Around Star

PSG and Premier League giants battle for Portugal

Tomas Araujo is currently the focus of a transfer battle involving PSG, Chelsea, and Liverpool.

The 23-year-old defender from Benfica has emerged as one of the top defensive talents in Europe, prompting interest from several clubs in need of bolstering their backlines.

Under contract until 2029 and featuring an €80 million release clause, Araujo has caught the eye of Chelsea and Liverpool, particularly as they missed out on Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen, who is set to join Real Madrid.

PSG is also considering Araujo as a potential successor to Marquinhos, whose future remains unclear.

Araujo is more than just a candidate; he is a versatile defender who can operate effectively as both a full-back and a center-back based on the tactical requirements of his team.

Statistically, Araujo stands out in several key metrics. As outlined by Fbref, his performance compared to other center-backs reveals impressive stats across a range of areas.

He is in the 94th percentile for progressive passes and ranks 98th for progressive carries among his peers. His tackling frequency of 2.73 tackles per 90 minutes positions him in the top 97% of center-backs.

Although his goal tally is modest, he excels creatively, delivering more assists and shot-creating actions than many defenders across Europe.

His skill in advancing play, covering ground, and handling pressure positions him as a model for contemporary ball-playing defenders.

PSG is also considering Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konaté

Tomás Araújo is not the only center-back PSG is keeping an eye on this season.

The Parisians are also closely following Ibrahima Konaté of Liverpool and Dayot Upamecano from Bayern Munich.

According to L’Équipe, there are concerns regarding Konaté’s contract situation, which may lead to a potential move back to his city.

In addition, Georg Holzner from kicker (via @iMiaSanMia) has indicated that discussions between Bayern and Upamecano have stalled over wage equality issues, potentially benefiting PSG.
