Wrexham is on the verge of securing a former Manchester United academy player due to injuries impacting key players on the team.
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s financial backing has boosted the Welsh club’s ascent to League One, the third level of English football, where they currently hold the second position after completing 12 games in the 2024/25 season.
Recent weeks have seen a rise in injuries among the main squad, with players like George Evans and Jordan Davies expected to be unavailable during a crucial upcoming stretch of games. Wrexham will take on Charlton Athletic, Mansfield Town, and Stockport County, along with separate cup matches against Harrogate Town and Port Vale, all within a three-week timeframe.
In light of these absences, Wrexham is likely to recruit a new player on a temporary basis. Matty James, a product of Manchester United’s beloved academy and a veteran of over 300 EFL appearances, is anticipated to join the club.
As reported by the Wrexham podcast RobRyanRed, James is set to sign a short-term contract until January. He is expected to step in for the injured George Evans and potentially cover for George Dobson, who may face suspension due to a buildup of yellow cards.
Recently, James was seen wearing Wrexham’s training attire while taking a photo with a fan.

Profile of Matty James: Wrexham’s Prospective Acquisition
James began his journey at United’s academy, earning his first professional contract in 2009 after standing out in the senior reserve squad, which at that time, was under the guidance of future first-team coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Despite not making his way into the first team at Manchester United, he later joined Preston North End following two loan spells.
The midfielder went on to play over 100 league matches for Leicester City after his 2012 signing, achieving victory in the EFL Championship during the 2013/14 season. He had subsequent loan periods at Barnsley and Coventry City before permanently moving to Bristol City in 2021, where he took on the role of captain.
Earlier in 2024, James left Bristol City as his contract ended and has reportedly been training with Wrexham for the past two weeks.
