Married Woman Arrested for Fraud

Babongile Mkhonta Mkhonta, a 35-year-old married woman, has been taken into custody for alleged fraud.

She is accused of falsely receiving child maintenance payments for a child that does not exist.

Over a period of five years, Mkhonta reportedly received a sum of E574,442 (around USD 29,600) from her ex-partner, Sihle Ndlovu, who believed he was supporting their imaginary child.

In her defense, Mkhonta insisted, “Ndlovu willingly sent me the money electronically.”

According to information from the Times of Swaziland, Ndlovu paid E5,000 (approximately USD 260) monthly, totaling E300,000 (about USD 15,500) over the five years. He also contributed to additional expenses, adding up to E274,442 (approximately USD 14,100).

Mkhonta’s arrest came after an investigation revealed that the child she had introduced to Ndlovu’s family in 2022 was fictitious. When ordered to present the child in court, she failed to do so.

She was arrested by the Manzini police on October 10, 2024, and charged with theft through deceit. Initially released on her own recognizance, Mkhonta was rearrested for not following the court order regarding the child.

In her bail documents, Mkhonta claimed, “I was arrested after reporting to the Manzini Police Station as directed. However, I did not steal any money; Ndlovu sent the funds voluntarily during our relationship.”

Currently married to another man, Mkhonta asserts that she has a solid case, stating, “I never asked Ndlovu for child support.” She emphasized that any money was sent willingly while they were together.

Mkhonta also raised concerns about her treatment in the overcrowded and poorly ventilated Mawelawela Women’s Correctional Services. She indicated a need for medical care in Durban, South Africa.

Her bail request is under consideration by Judge Nkosinathi Maseko as the matter awaits transfer to the High Court.
