General Godwin Osagie Abbe Passes Away
General Godwin Osagie Abbe, who served as Minister of Defence under the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, has passed away. His death occurred on Saturday in Abuja following a lengthy illness.
Abbe held the position of military Governor in two states: Akwa Ibom from July 31, 1988, to September 5, 1990, and Rivers from August 1990 to January 1992. He was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and also served as the Minister of Interior from July 26, 2007, to July 14, 2009.
Born on January 10, 1949, Abbe was an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, where he earned a Postgraduate Diploma in International Relations. He also graduated from the United States Army Infantry School, the Ghana Armed Forces Staff College, and the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru.
He played notable roles in various military units and retired in 1999 holding the rank of Major General.
Senator Monday Okpebholo from Edo State expressed his condolences over Abbe’s death, calling him a legendary figure from the state. In a statement, he praised Abbe’s remarkable military and administrative career, highlighting his dedication and exemplary service to Nigeria.
Okpebholo mentioned Abbe’s progression in the army, which began with his promotion to Lance Corporal in 1967, followed by his rise to Lieutenant and further significant leadership roles.
He noted that Abbe’s governance in Akwa Ibom and his ministerial roles showcased his exemplary leadership and care for the Nigerian populace.
The senator concluded with a tribute to Abbe and wished for his soul to rest in peace while hoping that his lasting impact serves as an inspiration for many in Edo State and beyond.
