Vietnam’s Historic ASEAN Cup Win
Coach Kim Sang Sik hailed Vietnam’s recent triumph in the 2024 ASEAN Cup against Thailand as a significant milestone, but he insists that this is just the start of bigger aspirations for the team.
“This win is truly historic. It was a tough game, but with the unwavering support from our fans, we emerged victorious. I also want to express my gratitude to our players for their incredible spirit and hard work,” Kim Sang Sik noted, reflecting on the team’s win.
Having previously obtained titles with clubs in the K-League, he highlighted the unique importance of this achievement at the national level: “Winning with the national team feels distinctly different. It’s my first experience of such a moment, and it means a lot to me.”
Looking ahead, Kim Sang Sik expressed that this victory serves as a launchpad for future challenges: “While we’ve reached a key goal, there are greater hurdles on the horizon, including the upcoming Asian Cup qualifiers and the SEA Games later this year. I see these events as fresh opportunities for our journey together.”
In a thrilling 3-2 victory against Thailand, forward Tuan Hai was a standout player, netting two essential goals. Kim Sang Sik explained his choice to include Tuan Hai in the final match, despite his limited play time earlier in the tournament:
“I approach every game with the aim to win. Tuan Hai had been training hard, and I reassured him that his opportunity would come. The final was his moment, and he embraced it magnificently. I thank him for those crucial goals, which came with a bit of fortune as well.”
The coach also addressed a contentious moment during the match involving a Thai player’s “phantom goal,” stating: “I believe it wasn’t a valid goal. It was disappointing, but I’m proud that my players stayed calm and focused.”
Kim Sang Sik’s insights highlight his commitment to cultivating a bright future for Vietnam’s national team, even amidst celebrations of their landmark achievement.
