When I was 17, my mother hung a large plaque of a girl from Iowa with dark hair, pigtails, and blue eyes. She was wearing a blue plaid shirt, blue jeans, and tan moccasins, with beaded eagles on the toes. The top of the plaque had “My Angel” on it. It was an artist’s rendition of an Iowa girl. I said in my heart, that one of these days I want to meet and marry a girl like that. I looked at that plaque for about a month and imagined myself someday meeting a girl like that.
Then I joined the Marines, and the plaque became a faded memory.
When I was 29 years old, I was working as a roughneck in a small town of about 25,000 people in Graham, Texas. I was playing pool after work at the local greasy spoon one afternoon. Suddenly a girl with dark hair, pigtails, and blue eyes, wearing a blue plaid shirt, blue jeans, and tan moccasins with beaded eagles on the toes, walk up to the payphone and made a phone call. There in front of me was the girl I had visualized in my mind years ago from that plaque.
I was dumbfounded and shocked. I got up the courage to go say hello. She briefly said hello, and went back to her phone call. I left, hoping I would see her at the restaurant on another day.
The next day she called me! She was looking for her boyfriend, and her girlfriend gave her my phone number because he was a friend of mine. I did not know where he was. But instead of hanging up, we talked and laughed for two hours! We started dating, and one day she asked me to marry her! Wow!
We had 40 years together, in the best marriage a man could ever ask for. One day we were discussing how I had asked God to bring her into my life. She told me that when she went to go find her boyfriend, she had a feeling that she needed to wear a blue plaid shirt. Unfortunately, she did not own a blue plaid shirt, so she borrowed her dad’s blue plaid shirt to wear that day. Imagine my surprise when she told me that! Wow!
But that is not all! One night she came in to wake me up to go to work. She said, “Get up and go forth!” So I thanked her for waking me. She lay down beside me, and said she loved me, and then she said, “I am your Angel!”
I was speechless! Everything I asked for when I was 17 came true. I was the luckiest guy in the world!
