The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, has warned of a potential strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to address their grievances. The threat came after a peaceful protest within the institution regarding the government’s inaction on a previous agreement with the union.
During the protest, ASUU-UNN members carried placards demanding the government to honor agreements, improve university education, and address lecturer salaries. They called for a renegotiation of the 2009 agreement.
If the government does not meet their demands within 21 days, ASUU-UNN members expressed readiness to support a nationwide indefinite strike called for by the national leadership.
Comrade Oyibo Eze, the Chairman of ASUU-UNN, criticized the government for its alleged neglect and self-serving actions, stating that despite efforts to resolve issues through diplomatic means, the only recourse left is a strike.
Eze highlighted the government’s failure to act on promised resolutions and expressed disappointment in President Bola Tinubu’s lack of action since assuming office.
Professor Johnson Urama, Deputy Vice Chancellor of UNN, commended the union for peacefully demonstrating their concerns and expressed hope that the government would address the issues promptly to avoid disruptions in academic activities.
