Joe Igbokwe, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, has expressed support for the proposal to establish a new state in the Southeast region.
Igbokwe commended the effort, stating that the call for additional states in the Southeast is a positive development.
In a Facebook post, the APC stalwart emphasized that Nigeria still owes the Southeast one more state and governor.
His comments coincide with the introduction of a bill advocating for the creation of Adada State, which cleared its first reading in the Senate recently.
The bill, officially known as the “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Bill, 2024 (SB. 482),” was put forward by Senator Okey Ezea representing Enugu North Senatorial District.
Ezea explained that the proposed legislation aims to modify specific sections of the Nigerian Constitution to enable the establishment of a new state in the Southeast.
Furthermore, a separate bill for the formation of Etiti State was presented in the House of Representatives and passed its initial reading.
If approved, Etiti State will be carved out from Anambra, Abia, Imo, Enugu, and Ebonyi States.
A group of five representatives, including Amobi Ogah, Miriam Onuoha, Kama Nkemkama, Chinwe Nnabuife, and Anayo Onwuegbu, jointly introduced the proposal to create a new state from the mentioned Southeastern states.
Etiti State will encompass 11 Local Government Areas selected from the aforementioned states, with the capital city planned to be located in Lokpanta.
