Fall of a Five-Story Building Owned by Ex-Governor Okorocha in Abuja
A building that spanned five stories and was the property of Rochas Okorocha, the former governor of Imo State, situated along Ahmadu Bello Way in Abuja, has tumbled.
Reported by The Nation, the incident took place approximately at 9 pm yesterday, eliciting fear in the entire vicinity.
Without delay, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command swiftly secured the area.
Information suggests that the collapsed structure was undergoing renovations.
Onlookers suspect that some individuals might have been trapped inside the collapsed edifice.
“It is plausible that there might be individuals within the fallen building who could have perished. I witnessed two individuals being rescued from the debris and taken to the hospital while rescue efforts were ongoing. The emergency responders lack coordination thus far for effective operations,” an eyewitness disclosed to the publication.
Nevertheless, a statement from the Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, mentioned that three individuals were saved from the wreckage.
In part, the statement reads: “The FCT Police Command affirms that on July 1, 2024, at about 8:40 p.m., a structure collapsed at Unity House, Area 11 along Nkwere Street.
“In answer to the emergency call, the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, psc, mni, promptly headed to the location with several patrol units as initial responders to isolate the area for potential rescues.
“Three victims were successfully extracted from the fallen building and swiftly transported to the hospital for medical attention.”
