Allegations Against Dismissed Police Officer

The Nigerian Police have accused former inspector Edith Uduma of collaborating with her husband to extort money from a police officer involved in the alleged rape of a 17-year-old female suspect.

Context of Dismissal

This allegation arose after Uduma claimed her dismissal was unwarranted. Below is the police’s official statement:

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms the dismissal of Edith Uduma, who engaged in gross misconduct related to the alleged rape of a female suspect by Sergeant Abraham Uzuobo.

On October 7, 2024, a video surfaced showing a sergeant accused of raping a suspect in the station. During the incident, Uduma was the Charge Room Officer and failed to act appropriately. Investigations revealed that Uzuobo took the victim to an isolated office to assault her.

Uduma recorded the incident but did not report it as she should have. Instead, she and her husband, also a police officer, tried to extort 1 million Naira from Uzuobo to cover up the crime. They accepted 45,000 Naira but later tried to blackmail him into paying the full amount. Frustrated by his refusal, they reported him and shared the video online.

All individuals involved have been penalized. Uzuobo has been dismissed and is currently imprisoned while facing trial. Uduma has also been dismissed, while her husband faced demotion.

Reputation and Justification

Following her dismissal, Uduma has made several claims about her innocence, attempting to tarnish the reputation of police authorities, including the Inspector-General of Police.

It is crucial to clarify that her dismissal was based on thorough investigations revealing her failure to document the incident, the act of extortion, and efforts to undermine justice for personal gain.

The Nigeria Police Force, led by Inspector-General Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM., maintains a strict stance against misconduct, particularly involving vulnerable individuals. The actions taken against Uduma highlight the Force’s commitment to integrity and justice.

The Force encourages the public to dismiss any false narratives and supports legitimate efforts to uphold justice.
