President Bola Tinubu has confirmed Kayode Opeifa as the new Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC).
Opeifa, formerly the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, takes over from Ben Iloanusi, who had been serving in an acting capacity since Fidet Okhiria vacated the role on October 18, 2024, after completing two consecutive terms.
His prominence rose during his time as the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation under Governor Babatunde Fashola, where he implemented various policies that enhanced the transportation network in Lagos. His efforts in traffic management helped establish the city as a benchmark for urban transport in Africa.
Following his accomplishments in Lagos, Opeifa continued his career as the Transport Secretary for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
He also played a crucial role in mitigating the severe traffic congestion in Lagos, particularly the Apapa area. As part of the Presidential Task Team (PTT) alongside former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, he focused on tackling the persistent gridlock surrounding Lagos ports, aiming for effective, long-term solutions to this significant transportation challenge, which earned him national acclaim for his expertise.
As he steps into the Managing Director role at the NRC, Opeifa will be responsible for pushing forward Nigeria’s railway infrastructure and services.
