Fourteen individuals have tragically lost their lives, and four others have sustained injuries in a devastating accident at Kanya Babba in Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The fatal incident took place on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, when a Toyota Hiace bus attempted to evade an immigration checkpoint and collided head-on with a DAF truck.
The Jigawa State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the tragedy in an official statement.
The statement revealed that the accident occurred at approximately 11:20 a.m., involving a DAF truck with registration number GMB 242 KD and a Toyota Hiace with registration number XA 381 GAS.
Despite attempts by immigration officers to stop the speeding and overloaded Toyota Hiace at the checkpoint, the driver ignored the directive and attempted to maneuver around it, leading to the fatal collision with the DAF truck.
The collision resulted in the immediate loss of 14 lives, with four others sustaining serious injuries. The law enforcement swiftly responded to the scene upon receiving the report.
The injured individuals were promptly taken to Kanya Babba Hospital for urgent medical attention. Meanwhile, the deceased were confirmed dead by a medical professional on site.
An investigation has been launched to address the circumstances of the accident and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
