The UEFA Champions League is set to have a revamped format for the 2024/25 season with significant changes and expansion.
A total of 36 teams will secure a spot in this prestigious club competition, moving from the traditional group stage setup to a ‘league’ format.
The draw for this new phase occurred on August 29, revealing the matchups for eight matchdays from mid-September 2024 to late January 2025.

A total of 36 teams have qualified for the extensively expanded UEFA Champions League tournament in 2024/25. This includes winners from current season competitions, automatic qualifiers from domestic leagues, and those entering via qualifying rounds.
Additional slots are allocated to leagues with the best coefficient ratings, with the final seven places determined through a qualification process.

Champions League Format Changes
The 2024/25 Champions League season will introduce several modifications to the format:
- The tournament size will increase from 32 to 36 teams qualifying for the group stage.
- Teams will participate in a new ‘league phase,’ combining the previous groups into a single league structure.
- Each team will play four home and four away matches within the league phase, totaling eight games. The top eight teams will progress to the knockout stage, while those ranking between ninth and 24th will enter a playoff round.
UEFA has announced a 21% increase in revenue-sharing payments to €935 million ($983 million) for the upcoming cycle.

UEFA has allocated the funds for various programs, including grassroots initiatives, social responsibility projects, refereeing and coaching education, and enhancing football infrastructure. The potential for an increase in prize money for clubs participating in European competitions in the upcoming four-year cycle remains uncertain.
