Call for Comprehensive Political Reform in Nigeria
Adewole Adebayo, who ran for president in 2023 representing the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has proposed a complete reform of Nigeria’s political framework.
He believes this change will lead to the emergence of authentic leaders who are dedicated to serving the populace.
Adebayo made these remarks during the 2024 reunion of former and current House of Representatives members dating back to 1979.
As the keynote speaker, he pointed out that many Nigerians feel that politicians lack integrity and principles, which has tarnished the nation’s reputation globally.
While praising the event organizer, Rt Honourable Mulikat Akande Adeola, Adebayo encouraged lawmakers to unite and confront issues of injustice and poor governance whenever necessary.
“Members of the House of Representatives are the closest elected officials to the citizens at the federal level,” he stated, expressing disappointment that many constituents no longer trust their representatives.
“Let’s be real with ourselves, where are we now? How far have we come?”
“We must acknowledge that we have not progressed as expected. This gathering highlights the need for ongoing dialogue.”
“Frankly speaking, we need to restore faith in the political class for the populace to trust their leaders once more.”
“When you introduce yourself as a politician, people should feel at ease, engage respectfully with you, and trust your words, both as individuals and as a government.”
“Achieving this will enhance Nigeria’s standing on the international stage. However, the current reality is quite the opposite.”
“Can we truly expect those who are struggling to respect what politicians have to say?”
“The consensus among Nigerians is that politicians lack principles,” he affirmed.
Adebayo reiterated that to secure a brighter future for all Nigerians, it is imperative to establish robust institutions in sectors such as security, judiciary, civil service, and industry.
“In a nation grappling with high unemployment, many view politics as a means to personal gain rather than public service,” he noted.
In their remarks, both the reunion organizer, Rt Honourable Mulikat Akande Adeola, and the former speaker of the 8th Assembly, on behalf of Rt Honourable Yakubu Dogara, described the reunion as unprecedented and committed to regular discussions on national matters and parliamentary issues.
The speakers emphasized the importance of focusing on nation-building and constructive criticism, despite Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges.
