Newcastle’s Urgent Triple Injury Setback Ahead of Arsenal Clash

Eddie Howe

Newcastle United is dealing with a growing injury dilemma ahead of Sunday’s crucial Premier League match against Arsenal, with Sven Botman now raising alarms for coach Eddie Howe.

Botman was substituted just 10 minutes into the second half during Newcastle’s 2-0 victory over Chelsea, leading to concerns about a potential flare-up of his ongoing knee issues.

“We’re optimistic,” Howe mentioned after the game when queried about Botman’s status. “He was applying ice to a knee issue at halftime, so we’re hoping for the best. I felt a tactical shift was beneficial for us.”

“Lewy [Miley] stepped in and performed admirably under challenging conditions,” Howe mentioned. “There was significant pressure on him, and he managed it remarkably.” However, there are still concerns regarding Botman, who returned to the starting lineup on May 11 after an extended absence of over three months.

Prior to this, he underwent a lengthy recovery period of ten months due to an ACL injury incurred in March 2024, necessitating surgery.

The 25-year-old made his comeback in January but faced a different issue with his other knee, which kept him off the field until just recently.

As reported by The Telegraph, Newcastle has “serious concerns” about Botman’s potential absence for the final two matches, including the crucial away game at the Emirates.

Moreover, vice-captain Kieran Trippier is still out due to a calf injury, and midfielder Joelinton is on the mend following knee surgery.

Currently sitting third in the league with 66 points, Newcastle requires just one more victory to secure Champions League entry.

Their upcoming matches include facing second-placed Arsenal away before concluding the season at home against Everton.
